Not exactly. A Mellotron is actually a tape player; each key on the keyboard has a strip of recording tape that contains its note, and pressing a key triggers that key's tape-strip to play. At least one later model of Mellotron put its tape-strips into a rack which could be removed so that a different rack, with a different set of tape-strips, could be installed.
